Q & A with Cheryl M.

We chatted with Cheryl for this week’s Q & A student session! Cheryl lives in California, and has been a student of ours since April of 2017!

Q: How did you first learn about Piano in a Flash?

A: My husband was watching TV and called me into the living room so I could catch the end of the segment he watched about Piano in a Flash, because he knew I had dreamed of playing the piano for years. I went online to learn more, and ended up buying the whole program. I’m about 75% of the way through all six courses.

Q: How often do you practice?

A: I practice nearly every day. I like to stay committed, especially when I’ve put this much effort into learning something.

Q: Do you play any other instruments?

A: I don’t play any other instruments, but I did try a couple other online piano learning programs. One program in particular managed to set up the absolute worst way of teaching piano. I was frustrated with it and decided to stick with Scott’s lessons. Scott’s method is way more realistic, I’m not trying to fight a metronome to play the right notes at the right time.

Q: Has learning piano helped you in other areas of your life? Examples: confidence boost, memory boost, less stressed, etc.

A: Playing and focusing on the piano relieves a lot of stress. My favorite time to play is 6:30 to 7:30 in the morning. I can sit there and do a lesson with Scott, uninterrupted, and before you know it, the hour is up. It doesn’t seem like an hour, because it’s so relaxing. You get a confidence boost after mastering songs too, especially when it’s a popular song you and others know.

Q: Why did you want to learn piano in the first place?

A: When I was young, I didn’t want to learn. My parents wanted me to play. The piano we had was from 1917, and it just didn’t seem fun. The teacher my parents found really instilled the fear of God in me, and I still couldn’t find it in me to play the songs right. Then, in college, I took a music course and started playing again. I’ve been dabbling with the piano since 1975.

Q: When you struggle with something in the lessons, what do you do?

A: It really varies. The biggest thing I do is play the song over and over. I’m a perfectionist, and years ago, my teacher even told me that I couldn’t be so rigid, I had to let the music flow. With Scott, I’m learning how to let it flow.
