I’m finding that my classical training does help me read lead sheets faster. And even better, I now read the melody line and then the chord notations.
It is incredibly freeing and I do need to listen closely to improve my ability to play by ear. I’m confident the buried for 50 years will emerge again. Not as easily perhaps but practicing for an hour every day helps dramatically.

I have just started learning to play and I am 64 years old. It is slow learning to read music all over again, as I used to play in band in high school. I just want to be able to sit down and play for myself or occasionally help the church when they go the assisted living. What do you suggest?
I just would love to play took piano lessons a little over a year and just felt like I was getting no were I want to learn gospel and Christmas carols any suggestions Scott

Hello!
My name is Ryan and i work with Scott here at Piano In A Flash. I think both Scott and I would suggest you check out our Course 1 – it is a great place to start with learning the piano, as it teaches you the basics of the piano while you are learning songs you know and love – many of them being Christmas and Gospel songs! You can click on this link to view Course 1. Below the button you will see the syllabus, which shows all the songs you could learn and skills you can master! – http://3.136.150.220/get-started-course-1/?utm_source=webiste&utm_medium=blog.comment&utm_campaign=support&utm_content=can.you.play.by.ear
