19 Apr Hey Scott— how should I clean my piano?
I’ve gotten this question a handful of times, and with how much folks are leaning into spring cleaning lately, I think this is a great time to answer it!
If you have an acoustic piano, I always recommend using a soft cloth or feather duster. These are not abrasive on the wood or lacquer finishes.
ALWAYS avoid using cleaning chemicals on your piano, as these can seriously damage the piano. This means no dusting spray, no Lysol spray, and no Fantastik cleaner sprays. Using alcohol can also cause cracks, so it is recommended to avoid that too. If you need a liquid cleaner for a serious dirt mark, use a diluted solution of neutral detergent and water to clean the area.
As for the tiny corners that dust might settle in… try using a q-tip!
As a precaution, always wash your hands before playing your piano. If a guest comes over and wants to play, there’s no harm in asking them to wash their hands as well— not only will it keep your piano clean, but it’ll help keep everyone healthier!
I hope that helps! Best of luck with your spring cleaning goals!
