I’ve spent my career helping adults play piano for the sheer joy of it. What started as a personal passion turned into a bestselling method, a PBS show, and now an online course that’s helped tens of thousands make music on their own terms.
Like a lot of folks, I took piano lessons as a kid… and like a lot of folks, I quit. The music just didn’t excite me. I fell in love with drums instead and played all through high school—but I never lost my interest in piano. One summer at jazz camp, I skipped a drum lesson to sit in on a jazz piano class, and that moment changed everything. What I learned there became the foundation of how I teach today, and from then on, I gradually shifted from drums to piano—and never looked back.
After years of hearing people say they wished they could just play piano for fun, I hit the road to share the simple method that worked for me. Six years and over 600 workshops later, I put it all into my book Play Piano in a Flash, which became a bestseller. That led to some unexpected and exciting moments—like teaching Robin Roberts on Good Morning America and hosting my own PBS show, The Piano Guy.
Hosting The Piano Guy for six seasons over eight years—and picking up six Emmy Awards along the way—was an incredible experience. But I knew there were still so many adults out there dreaming of playing for fun. That’s what led me to create Piano in a Flash: an online, step-by-step program built specifically for adults who want to play real songs using a simple, chord-based method. It’s helped tens of thousands of people finally sit down and play for the sheer joy of it—and I’d love for you to be next.
As a teacher, there's nothing that makes me happier than a student who has that "aha!" moment. I'm lucky enough to have thousands of them. Check some of them out below.
