For this blog post, we interviewed a long-time student of Piano in a Flash, Kim Adamson! Kim has lived in Florida (USA) for years, and has been a musician even longer. Q: When did you first learn about Scott and Piano in a Flash?

A: I was home from work one day several years ago and happened to turn the television to PBS, and Scott’s show, The Piano Guy, was playing. That piqued my interest, and afterwards, I went to a class Scott taught in Naples, Florida. I started working on the courses through Piano in a Flash— I’m currently working on Course 3.

Q: Did you have any prior musical training?

A: I played in several different bands in high school– whatever the band director needed, I played. I often played clarinet, french horn, and trombone. I was one of those students that could learn any of the instruments and play in a large ensemble. About twenty years ago I started to learn the harp, and now I teach other adults how to play and I play background music at events in the area.

Q: How was learning piano with Scott’s method, versus learning other instruments?

A: I found it to be rather easy. In the videos, Scott makes sure you know that you are capable of learning how to play the piano. It’s also easier because there’s no need to worry about an embouchure, like you would with a wind instrument, and even though some of the songs sound incredibly simple, Scott helps you understand how to make songs sound nice.

Q: Has playing piano helped you in other areas of life?

A: Music in general has always been something that helps me unwind and become less stressed. Adding piano to the mix of instruments has been fun though. My passion for music just grew since adding the piano to the mix.

Q: How has playing piano broadened your musical skills?

A: Well, for starters, I now use some of Scott’s methods when teaching my harp students. While I was always great with sheet music, Scott’s method taught me, and consequently helped me teach others, how to put feeling into the blueprint that printed music is.

These books are great. I have a cellist I play with frequently, so we’ll go through and pick songs to play together. It has been amazing to see how quickly the two of us can play as a duo. We can actually go in and sight read sometimes, and that’s always fun. Your method, Scott, makes it easy to play piano, even if we doubt our abilities.
